Achill Island

Achill has the highest sea cliffs in Europe. A sheer drop from Croaghaun’s summit plummets into the Atlantic at 688m.

What to do in Achill Island?

What isn’t there to do in Achill ! I will start with one of my favourite beaches… Keem Bay is a very picturesque beach with a twisting cliff-top route on the way down to the sands that are as white and as fine as salt complimenting the cool azure waters below .… you would be forgiven for thinking you were in the Bahamas …. on a fine sunny day.

There are many walking trails, water sports, kite surfing, fishing, cycling, golf, horse riding and swimming at the blue flag beaches, visit the Aquarium or be moved by the stories of the Deserted Village.

Archaeological sites on the island can be visited including megalithic tombs and a crannog (manmade island built in lakes or estuaries where they built their houses. Iron Age) that you can explore.

To finish such an energetic day, try a seaweed bath or drop in to one of the many pubs for a quiet pint of the black stuff.

P.S  mind the sheep !
