Grainne Uaile Castle
Grainne Uaile Castle is a historic landmark in Newport, Co. Mayo about a 7 minute drive from Riverside Bed & Breakfast.

Grainne Uaile (Grace O’Malley) lived in the 16th century and was principally a sea trader. At the height of her career she controlled much of the Irish west coast. She traded with Spain, Portugal and Scotland and fought rival clans as well as English forces sent to bring Connacht under their control. At one stage she held 11 castles, over a thousand head of cattle and horses and a fleet that included 3 galleys and many other smaller vessels. Carrickahowley Castle (Rockfleet) near Newport became her main residence from the time of her marriage to Richard Bourke in 1566.Grainne maintained her dominance into her old age and died in her seventies in 1603. Grainne is buried in the Abbey on Clare Island.
